Why Great Shopfront Design Matters: The BøF Story
From overlooked to unmissable: how a hand-painted shopfront helped transform BØF into a standout Frome destination.
Good shops deserve to look as good as what’s inside.
BØF already had the goods. Proper craftsmanship. Incredible meat. A butcher who genuinely cares about his craft.
What they needed was a shopfront that told the same story before customers even stepped inside.
That’s where I came in.
THE CHALLENGE
A business can be brilliant on the inside and still be overlooked from the street.
Shopfronts do a lot of heavy lifting. They create first impressions. Set expectations. Stop people in their tracks.
And in a busy town like Frome, standing out matters.
BØF wanted a shopfront that reflected the quality of what they do — something with personality, confidence and proper presence.
Not generic.
Not forgettable.
THE APPROACH
The previous tenant had also been a butcher, so the obvious choice would have been to keep things safe.
White frontage. Traditional. Familiar.
But I’d already sensed Zander wasn’t interested in looking like every other butcher on the high street.
I asked to see his branding. One colour immediately jumped off the page.
“Let’s paint the whole shop in this,” I said.
Without hesitation, he smiled and said, “Let’s do it.”
That’s all I needed to hear.
Everything was painted by hand in scorching afternoon sunshine over a few days.
No vinyl pretending to be craftsmanship. No shortcuts. Just proper signwriting, carefully considered lettering and a finish with real character.
Because when a business is built around skill, care and quality, its shopfront should tell the same story.
The perfectly imperfect human touch matters.
Especially for a butcher.
THE RESULT
The transformation was immediate.
BØF went from being a butcher in town to feeling like the butcher worth making a trip for.
A proper destination.
A place with presence.
The kind of business people notice, remember and tell their mates about.
That’s the thing people often forget about good signage.
It isn’t decoration.
It’s positioning.
It tells people who you are before a single word is spoken.
WHY THIS WORK MATTERS
I love projects like this because they go beyond aesthetics.
This was about helping an independent business feel proud of what they’ve built. Helping a brilliant owner show up with confidence. Helping good work get noticed.
That’s what great signage should do.
Good signs. Good times.
GOT A SHOPFRONT THAT’S NOT PULLING ITS WEIGHT?
If your business deserves better than faded vinyl and forgettable signage, let’s sort it.
Your shopfront should be your hardest-working salesperson.
